If cereal grains are so health...Bravo Dr. Pelouze.

If cereal grains are so healthy and we all should be eating them in high amounts as the basis of our diet, one would think that there is good evidence from randomized controlled trials demonstrating its beneficial health effects and not just epidemiological evidence, which can't show cause and effect and is known to produce conflicting results because of the various confounders that researchers cannot control in such type of studies.

Because of space and time constraints, let us look at one important randomized controlled trial with hard end points, the DART study. This study found a tendency towards increased cardiovascular mortality in the group advised to eat more fiber, the majority of which was derived from cereal grains (1). And of relevance, this non-significant effect became statistically significant, after adjustment for possible confounding factors, such as medication and health state (2).

1.
