How does sugar/carbs interact with inflammation?
Put very simply we can say that:
Glucose oxidation increases ROS (Radical Oxygen Species) and inflammation, we can barely imagine that:
"A total of 75 g glucose intake causes acute oxidative and inflammatory stress, as reflected in increased superoxide radical O2 generation by polymorphonuclear leukocytes, mononuclear cells and the enzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate" (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3992527/).
In this setting, high carb eaters eat a diet poor in W3PUFAs and have a high W6/W3 ratio (C18 linolenic and linoleic FA are essential).
On the other hand, Insulin is clearly anti-inflammatory.
In keeping with this, T2D, Metabolic syndrome and critically ill patients do have hyperglycemia and a pro-inflammatory state.
More those patients including women develop mainly android obesity (which shows easily on a profile view in front of the mirror) and this accumulation of fat inside the abdomen is a potent proinflammatory "organ".
Here are the main reasons why in case of infection and presently the C19, the effect of the virus adds to the pro-inflammatory state. This leads to a Cytokine Storm.
Commentary:
When I said "classic" news they concerned physicians involved in the field of low carb whole food diet and the surprise is usually for patients even other physicians who are not aware...
Short story: one of my friend, physician and great athlete made a consultation for another member of our sports club and said: "well this result is probably an error of the lab. They have confused the blood sample with another patient... Hervé you will do another BG, HbA1c next week. Ok"
Indeed the guy was on LCWF diet for 5 months and had lost 17 kg. His T2D had disappeared and as I warned him he had stopped metformin when his BG plunged.
We met before summer and I gave him the pillars of LCWF diet during lunch, he is a teacher so he applied very conscientiously the advice... He returned to his GP at the end of October.
