Is it possible to reduce CRP?

http://www.tandfonline.com/toc/uacn20/current

Background: Mushrooms are widely cited for their medicinal qualities, yet very few human intervention studies have been done using contemporary guidelines.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine whether consumption of whole, dried Lentinula edodes (shiitake) mushrooms could improve human immune function. Primary objectives were to ascertain whether L. edodesconsumption would improve γδ-T cell proliferation and activation responses, quantify a dose response, and elicit cytokine secretion patterns. Secondary objectives included determining changes in natural killer T (NK-T) cell proliferation and activation, secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) in saliva, and C-reactive protein (CRP) in serum.

Design: Fifty-two healthy males and females, aged 21–41 years, participated in a 4-week parallel group study, consuming either 5 or 10 g of mushrooms daily. Each subject had blood drawn before and after 4 weeks of daily L. edodes consumption. Saliva and serum were also collected. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were cultured in autologous serum for 24 hours or 6 days, stained, and examined by flow cytometry.

Results: Eating L. edodes for 4 weeks resulted in increased ex vivo proliferation of γδ-T (60% more, p < 0.0001) and NK-T (2-fold more, p < 0.0001) cells. Both cell types also demonstrated a greater ability to express activation receptors, suggesting that consuming mushrooms improved cell effector function. The increase in sIgA implied improved gut immunity. The reduction in CRP suggested lower inflammation. The pattern of cytokines secreted before and after mushroom consumption was significantly different; consumption resulted in increased interleukin (IL)-4, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and IL-1α levels, a decreased macrophage inflammatory protein-1α/chemokine C-C ligand 3 (MIP-1α/CCL3) level, and no change to IL-6, IL-1β, MIP-1β, IL-17 and interferon (IFN)-γ levels.

Conclusions: Regular L. edodesconsumption resulted in improved immunity, as seen by improved cell proliferation and activation and increased sIgA production. The changes observed in cytokine and serum CRP levels suggest that these improvements occurred under conditions that were less inflammatory than those that existed before consumption.

Tooth decay

"The way we treat teeth today is not ideal. When we repair a tooth by putting in a filling, that tooth enters a cycle of drilling and refilling as, ultimately, each 'repair' fails.
"Not only is our device kinder to the patient and better for their teeth, but it's expected to be at least as cost-effective as current dental treatments. Along with fighting tooth decay, our device can also be used to whiten teeth."

Oleocanthal in olives and olive oil: prefer olives and unfiltered recent olive oil

http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/14786419.2010.511214?url_ver=Z39.88-2003&rfr_id=ori:rid:crossref.org&rfr_dat=cr_pub%3dpubmed#.VSUZ9fysWL0

Oleocanthal concentration in EVOO is highly variable, ranging from as little as 0.2 mg/kg to as high as 498 mg/kg (Gomez-Rico et al., 2006). Such variation in oleocanthal concentration amongst differing EVOOs may be due to multiple factors that have the capacity to modify the concentration of this compound (Carrasco-Pancorbo et al., 2005). These factors include: method of phenolic extraction and quantification, geographic region of olive growth, olive tree cultivar, agricultural techniques applied to cultivate olives, olive maturity, processing of the olives to oil, storage of oil, and domestic heat application to oil.

Glyphosate and bacteria

Kurenbach B, Marjoshi D, Amábile-Cuevas CF, Ferguson GC, Godsoe W, Gibson P, Heinemann JA. Sublethal Exposure to Commercial Formulations of the Herbicides Dicamba, 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid, and Glyphosate Cause Changes in Antibiotic Susceptibility in Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. MBio. 2015 Mar 24;6(2). pii: e00009-15. doi: 10.1128/mBio.00009-15.

Sarcopenia is a major issue of aging

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/25809808/?i=2&from=protein+and+sarcopenia

CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that leucine supplementation was found to exert beneficial effects on body weight, body mass index, and lean body mass in older persons in those subjects already prone to sarcopenia, but not muscle strength. However, due to the heterogeneity between the trials included in this systematic review, further studies adopting a homogenous design with respect to participant characteristics duration as well as the kind and amount of daily supplement in use are required.

Cancer patients are disabled by sarcopenia. It seems that EPA can help.

It appears that the supplement food industry had tried with success to bypass evidence based medicine and grew on unproven basis. The backlash of the public didn't occur but industrial leaders of the field should think twice before doing business as usual.
