Beurre cru chez Leclerc

Trouver du lait cru est très difficile... Pour le beurre cela devient un peu plus facile. Même les supermarchés s'y mettent soit sous forme de motte mais il faut bien demander s'il est cru et maintenat sous forme de pain de 250 ou 125g.
Bravo à Leclerc pour le référencement et en plus ce beurre d'Isigny est très goûteux, assez jaune, onctueux.
On peut ainsi faire des beurres fondus au bain Marie avec du fenouil frais pour un loup au four ou bien de la bière pour un turbot choucroute...
Préférez le beurre cru!

Afraid of Hippocampal aging? Exercise!

Mild exercise activates hippocampal neurons through the glutamatergic pathway and also promotes adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN). We hypothesized that such exercise could enhance local androgen synthesis and cause AHN because hippocampal steroid synthesis is facilitated by activated neurons via N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors. Here we addressed this question using a mild-intense treadmill running model that has been shown to be a potent AHN stimulator. A mass-spectrometric analysis demonstrated that hippocampal dihydrotestosterone increased significantly, whereas testosterone levels did not increase significantly after 2 wk of treadmill running in both orchidectomized (ORX) and sham castrated (Sham) male rats. Furthermore, analysis of mRNA expression for the two isoforms of 5α-reductases (srd5a1srd5a2) and for androgen receptor (AR) revealed that both increased in the hippocampus after exercise, even in ORX rats. All rats were injected twice with 5′-bromo-2′deoxyuridine (50 mg/kg body weight, i.p.) on the day before training. Mild exercise significantly increased AHN in both ORX and Sham rats. Moreover, the increase of doublecortin or 5′-bromo-2′deoxyuridine/NeuN-positive cells in ORX rats was blocked by s.c. flutamide, an AR antagonist. It was also found that application of an estrogen receptor antagonist, tamoxifen, did not suppress exercise-induced AHN. These results support the hypothesis that, in male animals, mild exercise enhances hippocampal synthesis of dihydrotestosterone and increases AHN via androgenenic mediation.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D3[25(OH)D3] concentration in pregnancy is associated with neuropsychological development in infants.

METHODS: The Spanish population-based cohort study INfancia y Medio Ambiente Project recruited pregnant women during the first trimester of pregnancy between November 2003 and February 2008. Completed data on 1820 mother-infant pairs were used. Maternal plasma 25(OH)D3 concentration was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography in pregnancy (mean 13.5±2.1 weeks of gestation). Offspring mental and psychomotor scores were assessed by trained psychologists at age 14 months (range, 11–23) by using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development. β-Coefficients with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of mental and psychomotor scores associated with continuous or categorical concentrations of maternal plasma 25(OH)D3 were calculated by using linear regression analysis.

RESULTS: The median plasma value of 25(OH)D3 in pregnancy was 29.6 ng/mL (interquartile range, 21.8–37.3). A positive linear relationship was found between circulating concentrations of maternal 25(OH)D3concentrations in pregnancy and mental and psychomotor scores in the offspring. After adjustment for potential confounders, infants of mothers with 25(OH)D3 concentrations in pregnancy >30 ng/mL showed higher mental score (β = 2.60; 95% CI 0.63–4.56) and higher psychomotor score (β = 2.32; 95% CI 0.36–4.28) in comparison with those of mothers with 25(OH)D3concentrations <20 br="br" ml.="ml." ng="ng">

CONCLUSIONS: Higher circulating concentration of maternal 25(OH)D3 in pregnancy was associated with improved mental and psychomotor development in infants.

Objective—We tested the hypothesis that reduced plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D associates with increased risk of ischemic heart disease, myocardial infarction, and early death.
Methods and Results—We measured baseline plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D in 10 170 women and men from the Danish general population without vitamin D–fortified food. During 29 years of follow-up, 3100 persons developed ischemic heart disease, 1625 myocardial infarction, and 6747 died. Decreasing plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were associated with increasing risk of ischemic heart disease, myocardial infarction, and early death as a function of seasonally adjusted percentile categories (P for trend, 2×10−5–3×10–53). Comparing individuals with plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels at the 1st to 4th percentile with individuals with levels at the 50th to 100th percentile, the multivariable adjusted risk was increased by 40% (95% CI, 14%–72%) for ischemic heart disease, by 64% (25%–114%) for myocardial infarction, by 57% (38%–78%) for early death, and by 81% (40%–135%) for fatal ischemic heart disease/myocardial infarction. In the meta-analyses of 18 and 17 studies, risk of ischemic heart disease and early death were increased by 39% (25%–54%) and 46% (31%–64%) for lowest versus highest quartile of 25-hydroxyvitamin D level.
Conclusion—We observed increasing risk of ischemic heart disease, myocardial infarction, and early death with decreasing plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. These findings were substantiated in meta-analyses.

Biocides, GMO, do you need them?

The very interesting question about the present debate on GMO, pesticides, glyphosate and so on is the need of this stuff for your daily food supply.
Sorry but I have no serious data which prove that I need them either nutritionally or economically.
The reason why I skip them until I will need them.

A great live fermented drink: watermelon!

First buy a fresh non pasteurized non filtered watermelon juice. Or make it!  Let it fermented spontaneously at room temperature. Then after 24 h refrigerate it and begin to drink it after 12 hours. Obviously temperature humidity and other factors play a role in fermentation so the delay may vary... Adapt to your ecosystem. More for extreme low carb dieters the drink will change with time even at 6° Celsius because the sugar content decreases, so you can keep it in your frig... Try and do your own fermentation process. 
You got a fruit kefir! 
Health benefits of watermelon? the answer is yes, at least through L-citrulline! In watermelon Kefir the amount of L-Citrulline is less than in fresh juice because bacteria use free amino acids for their metabolism. But the amount is maily dependent of the cultivar of watermelon.

Ankle-brachial index (ABI) and ankle blood pressure (BP) are associated with increased carotid wave reflection (augmentation index, AIx). Oral L-citrulline and L-arginine from synthetic or watermelon sources have reduced brachial BP, aortic BP, and aortic AIx. A directly measured carotid AIx (cAIx) rather than aortic AIx has been proposed as a better measurement of central AIx. We evaluated the effects of watermelon extract on ankle BP and cAIx in individuals with normal ABI and prehypertension or stage 1 hypertension.


Ankle and brachial systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), cAIx, ABI, and heart rate (HR) were evaluated in the supine position in 14 adults (11 women/3 men, age 58 ± 1 years) with prehypertension or stage 1 hypertension (153 ± 4 mm Hg). Subjects were randomly assigned to 6 weeks of watermelon extract supplementation (L-citrulline/L-arginine, 6 g daily) or placebo followed by a 2-week washout period and then crossover.


Ankle and brachial SBP (-11.5 ± 3.8 and -15.1 ± 2.8 mm Hg), DBP (-7.8 ± 2.3 and -7.6 ± 1.8 mm Hg), and MAP (-9.8 ± 2.6 and -7.3 ± 1.8 mm Hg), and cAIx (-8.8 ± 2.6 %) decreased significantly (P < 0.05) after watermelon supplementation compared to placebo. Watermelon supplementation had no significant effect (P > 0.05) on ABI and HR.


This study shows that watermelon extract supplementation reduces ankle BP, brachial BP, and carotid wave reflection in obese middle-aged adults with prehypertension or stage 1 hypertension and normal ABI, which may reflect improved arterial function.

Ok I know they need protein and sun or vitamin D, but if they eat paleo they will find a lot of calcium in greens and ... Oysters! More delicious than raw parsley!

About the recent meta analysis on long w3 PUFA

This study is a meta analysis. Pooling results is not the mantra of valid statistiscs...

In other words they don't reject the null hypothesis by pooling the data of 30 studies which are very different...

In my point of view it's not a strong evidence. And I am more confident in RCT when I see a patient and when he fit with the criteria of a RCT.

So long chain PUFA as other supplements or drugs are to be prescribed in selective patients when strong clinical evidence is available through JELIS, GISSI ...

Nevertheless this meta analysis should be considered to design new studies R and C in selective patients and during sufficient time to look at a lowering effect on CV deaths in the present era of statin use and a higher prevalence of obesity and D2.

Wine: no benefit of alcohol?

I was a few years ago invited to a conference in Pau set up by a local physician organization and the different speakers advocated wine drinking in order to decrease CV diseases.
The management of the organization and the speakers were obviously tied with Bordeaux wine lobbies. They were from Bordeaux or trained in Bordeaux.
I asked the painful question:
"Is fermented grape juice of low alcohol content or non alcoholised as efficient in reducing the CV risk?"
The speaker in an arrogant answer considered my question completely stupid.
The answer of science is there. I don't remember the name of this speaker and the history of science will do the same... on the contrary in the future we will benefit of non alcoholised fermented beverages because of high polyphenol content (including resveratrol) without the doubtful benefits of alcohol even in tiny amount.
