Neanderthals didn't surf but they fished rather frequently...

Bones are eternal but fishy bones disappear, science is beautiful. 
Researchers found that exostosis (true bones) in the external ear conduit are indirect proofs of fishing in Neanderthals.

Neandertals are frequently described as less intelligent than us...  We don't know and the constructivist view according to which we are the most intelligent ape is at least a simplification... One thing is more probable than previously after this study, Neanderthals who were very intelligent had found that fishes and seafood are a good source of proteins and PUFA and in the same time that they were far less dangerous or exhausting than hunting antelopes.
